Of all the technologies that have gone extinct in your lifetime, which one do you miss the most?
A plastic case, with thin brown tape
that played a song with hiss
is one of many twentieth century
technologies I miss
The twisted tape unfurling fast
without a thought or care
clogging up my tape machine
before I am aware
I scream in horror as I see
The damn machine go nuts
I should have bought that dumb head cleaner
No if’s, no ands, no buts
My Carpenters tape is all jammed up
and so with broken heart
I grab a stupid butter knife
and take the boombox apart
Inside I see a ribboned mess
jammed up inside some gears
I try to salvage all I can
while holding back the tears
Lo and Behold! the tape is out
but now what do I do?
the instructions said to grab a pencil
preferably a no. 2
And so I wind the tape back up
and hope it works again
and when it does, I swell with pride
On Top of the World, I grin

Oh yes, I remember it well. Remember the little accordion pleats you tried to press out, hoping you weren’t erasing anything? I got to be a master of patience, fixing the damned things. No, no nostalgia here, but loved your poem. I still have a ton of these I couldn’t throw away, though I no longer have anything to play them on! http://judydykstrabrown.com/2015/07/02/books/

The only cassette tape that I still have left is a cassette single of The Macarena. I have a cassette player on a Crosley console I got a while back. It’s never been used. I use it to play records. Those I have.

And I brought all my LP’s and 45’s with me to Mexico 14 years ago and have nothing to play them on!!!

Crosley has all kinds of vintage and retro turntable reproductions. In all kinds of colors. I have 2. Since I’m used to my ipod and music on my phone, it seems like much more of a chore that it used to be. Actually having to change the song yourself. Egads! But, there is the nostalgia factor.

I know. I’m too lazy for records–I don’t deserve them! Yet I hold on…..

Great post it made me laugh out loud. I identified with the frustration and process of trying to resolve the issue 🙂 Linda

Thanks Linda. I wasn’t really sure what to write on the topic and whenever that happens I just do a poem. 🙂
